The DESIGN Kuopio Residency is run by the Ladies’ Association of Kuopio. The Ladies’ Association of Kuopio is an ideological organization which seeks to advance and support arts and crafts, design, culture, visual arts and the creative industries, as well as welfare. The Ladies’ Association of Kuopio was founded in 1860 and its handicraft school for poor girls was established in 1884. From then on, the Association has been providing handicraft, design education and employment.
Kuopio Academy of Design was founded in its current form 130 years after the association's first Craftschool. Children’s, Youth, Adults’ and Online Academy of Design are run by the Ladies’ Association of Kuopio. Academies provide design education for students of various age groups. Education is based on basic-education of arts (Ministry of Education of Finland) with emphasis on design. Education of Academies is themed by the history of Finnish design from the Stone Age to the future. Based on the Association's history, our Academy gives further education for SME’s and professionals working in the field of design as well.
DESIGN Kuopio Residency is part of Finnish FAIRE residency network and international Resartis residency network.

By train: Kuopion Academy of Design and DESIGN Kuopio Residency is about 15 minutes walk from Kuopio railway station. It takes about 4 hours to travel from Helsinki to Kuopio by train.
By plane: Kuopio Airport is located about 30 km from center of Kuopio.
By car: Kuopio is located in North Savonia about 400 km north from Helsinki.

DESIGN Kuopio Residency offers designers and artists the opportunity to live and work in an inspiring milieu right in the center of Kuopio and close to the area's magnificent nature.
The residency apartment is located right next to the Kuopio Academy of Design, in a brand new apartment building. Around the peaceful house, you will find downtown services, numerous beautiful parks and the beaches of Kallavesi. A residency apartment is suitable also for a designer couple or two designers, if you want to apply as a team. Even a family residency is possible. The selected designer oversees his/her own traveling, -working and living expenses during the residency period. The residency apartment fee is 310 €/week and 750 €/month, including a shared studio space in the Kuopio Academy of Design’s beautiful, historic office building.
You can apply to the DESIGN Kuopio Residency by ongoing application, eight different Open Calls or renting a residency apartment for a short time visit in Kuopio.
The DESIGN Kuopio residency program is open for designers year round – application to the DESIGN Kuopio Residency is ongoing. You can apply to the residency with your own projectplan by our online application form. We appreciate that the designer in our residency would teach, give a public lecture and/or run a workshop beside their own design work. Designer could also run a project with local entrepreneurs.
The selected designer is in charge of his/her own traveling, working and living expenses during the residency period. Hourly based wages are paid for lectures, workshops and feedback studios.
The designers are offered new contacts to the local art field and design organizations as well as to the local community. A Residence apartment is suitable also for a designer couple or two designers, if you want to apply as a team. Even a family residency is possible.

Open Calls for DESIGN Kuopio Residency Programme 2023 are open! This year we have eight different Open Calls for designers and artists to work in our Design Academy groups.
The Residency Program is connected to Kuopio Academy of Design’s basic studies curriculum, themed around the history of Finnish design from the Stone Age to the Future. The designer-in-residence participates for a week in teaching students of the Academy of Design of different ages, inspiring them to ideate and design the subject together with the teachers of the Academy of Design. The students of the Academy of Design study the extensive curriculum of the basic education of handicraft art with a focus on design, with a curriculum based on the history of Finnish design.

The 2023 Spring semester is dedicated to future design, in the Autumn semester we go way back to the Stone Age. The Designer in residence is expected to give a workshop for our basic studies groups in Children’s, Teens’, Adults’ and online Design Academies according to the project proposal which should be suitable for our themes. The DESIGN Kuopio Residency Open Call is open for eight different designers/artists.
